District Board of Directors Elections Overview

The Durango West #1 Board is composed of dedicated volunteers who serve our community by overseeing important district matters. Here’s an overview of how the board operates and how members are elected:

Election Process

• Election Frequency: Held every May in odd-numbered years.

• Seats & Position Numbers:

  • There are 5 board seats, each with a pre-assigned "Numbered Position" to help track terms and elections.

  • Each election cycle, either 2 or 3 seats are up for election.

Term Length & Staggered Elections

• 4-Year Terms: Directors serve for four-year terms.

• Staggered Terms: Terms are staggered by Position Number to ensure some experienced members are always on the board. This setup helps maintain continuity and experience while allowing new members to join.

Term Limits

• Two Full Terms: Directors can serve a maximum of two terms (8 years) as per Colorado law.

• Term Limits in Effect: Durango West #1 has not opted out of term limits. Directors are subject to these limits unless the district holds an election to change them.​

Appointments & Resignations

• Director Appointments: If a board member resigns mid-term, the remaining board members appoint a replacement at their discretion, without a public election, yet the appointee must run at the next earliest election date.

Board Officer Roles

• Board officers are nominated by the board and are distinct from the numbered positions:

  • President

  • Vice President

  • Secretary

  • Treasurer

  • Secretary-Treasurer (may be a combined role)

  • The remaining members are referred to as "Member".

Resignation Trends

• Resignations can occur for many reasons, including:

  • Job changes, family commitments, relocation, or personal circumstances.

• When a director resigns, the board will search for a replacement, who will run for election at the next election cycle.

Self-Nomination Process

• Self-Nomination Forms are available from the district manager or the state of Colorado.

  • The self nomination form must be submitted no later than 63 days before the election date (usually by late February).
